GRAND CANAL
OVERVIEW
The Grand Canal, also known as Canale Grande or Canolazzo, splits the city of Venice in half with churches, hotels and more lining it. The canal is just over 2 miles in length and rather than being straight, is winding, S shaped.

4 BRIDGES
To make the Grand Canal a bit less overwhelming, there are four bridges that split up Canolazzo. The first is the Rialto Bridge, the oldest of the bridges, that is at about the 1/2 way point along the Canal. On the East end of the Canal is the Accademia Bridge, which links the Accademia gallery in Dorsoduro to the San Marco area. According to http://www.italyheaven.co.uk, the Accademia Bridge offers "two of the best views in Venice", because one can see the Canal from 2 different directions. On the western end of the Canal is the Scalzi Bridge, to give foot-travelers easier access to the railway station. Finally, there's the Constitution Bridge that connects the railway station to the bus station. WHY IS GRAND CANAL SO FAMOUS?
